The Security Benefits to Double-Glazed Windows
The thermal and noise-insulation properties of double-glazed windows have always been a common topic of discussion when it comes to the benefits of installing these windows. What's often been neglected, however, is the added security you can look forward to when you buy and install these windows.
Not so Easy to Break Into
The glass used in double-glazed windows is tougher and thicker compared to what you'd find on standard window panes. It would take a burglar or an intruder quite a bit of effort to break the glass. And once they are done with the first one, they will still have the second pane to deal with, and many may choose to give up for good.
If you want to enjoy added protection from your double-glazed windows, you can never go wrong with toughened glass. This type of glass is as much as five times stronger than the ordinary glass used in single-glazed windows.
Another great choice is laminated glass. While its strength doesn't quite match that of toughened glass, this type of glass doesn't break into numerous shards the way that ordinary glass does. Intruders will not be able to penetrate through the sheet of glass, adding to your security.
One of the most highly recommended framing choices for double-glazed windows is uPVC frames. The inherent strength and durability of these frames make them more difficult to break than other types of frames.
It's also not the easiest thing to lever out the panes from the frame. During installation, the panes are fitted into the frame from the inside, which makes it impossible for intruders to gain entry by pressing out the panes.
Advantages of the Right Accessories
Throw in windows restrictors and locks into the assembly of your double-glazed windows, and you will greatly improve your security. You can use a multi-point system to secure and fasten the panes into your strong uPVC frames. This beats the putty in single-glazed windows that is easy to remove. Similarly, if you install hinge restrictors, you will be able to stop intruders from coming in through your open windows.
An Excellent Addition
As highlighted, there are security benefits to installing double-glazed windows. However, always keep in mind that these shouldn't be the only measures you have in place. The windows should only serve to complement other measures, such as a robust door and a functional burglar alarm system.
